5 Places in Gujarat To Spot Indian Onager

Indian Wild Ass are known as Indian Onager or Khur, listed as Near Threatened and found only in and outside of the Wild Ass Wildlife Sanctuary of Gujarat. Indian Onager also seen in the district of Surendranagar, Banaskantha and Mehsana but they mostly live in surrounding areas of the Great Rann of Kutch.

The Indian Onager are among the fasted running land animals in India along with Blackbucks, Chinkaras, Striped hyenas and Indian wolves.

* Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary

Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary in the Little Rann of Kutch is one of the last place in Gujarat where endangered wild ass can be spotted in India. The wildlife sanctuary is a saline desert and habitat to many unique and species of animals and birds, including Nilgai,reptiles and endangered Indian Wild Ass Khur or Indian Onager.

* Banni Grasslands Reserve


Banni Grasslands Reserve at the edge of the Thar desert is known for rich wildlife and biodiversity. The grasslands belt has a rich diversity of avifauna and home to mammals such Asiatic wildcat, desert fox,caracal, blackbuck and Indian wild ass.

* Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary

Nal Sarovar is the largest wetland bird sanctuary in Gujarat state and home to endangered wild ass, black buck and 210 species of birds in the winter season.The lake attracts greater flamingos, pelicans and many other migratory birds.

* Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary

Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Great Rann of Kutch and supports wide variety of mammalian wildlife. The sanctuary along with Kutch Bustard Sanctuary and Chari Dhand Wetland Conservation Reserve are home to thousands of greater flamingo.

* Chari Dhand Wetland Conservation Reserve

Chari Dhand Wetland is actually a seasonal desert wetland and home to number of migratory and endangered species of birds. The wetland along with banni grasslands are few last remaining home of Indian Onager in Gujarat.
