Where a sheet of ice spread all around can make you feel like heaven. This small place in the heart of Uttarakhand is part of the Kedarnath Wildlife Century. This place is also the base for trekking up to Tungnath. One can also guess the beauty of this place that its height is very high and the movement of people here is still less. How to come

If you have to travel by air to come here, then you can come here from Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun, 226 km from Chopta. The airport receives regular flights from Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi. While talking about the nearest railway station, the nearest station is Rishikesh. Bus travel can also be done from Haridwar, Dehradun and Rishikesh.

When to come

The right time to visit this place is summer and monsoon. It is advisable to avoid coming here during the winter season because there is a lot of snowfall at that time.

Mini Switzerland is Chopta-

This small place in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand is at an altitude of 2680 meters. But it is not called Mini Switzerland because of this, but the reason for it being said is the grasslands, also known as Bugyals. They are exactly the same as in Switzerland.

Shiva temple built on the highest height -


This place is also known for the Tungnath temple. This temple is known as the highest height Shiva temple in the whole world. Located in the Tungnath Mountain Range, this temple is built at an altitude of 3680 meters above sea level. This place is just 3.5 kilometers from Chopta. This temple is one of the major religious centers of Panch Kedar for Hindus.

Ravan's sins

There is another story about Chopta which has become a base camp for those trekking towards Panch Kedar. According to Hindu mythology, Ravana came to this temple when he felt that he had committed many sins and should be repented.

Where to Stay in Chopta?

There are many simple guest houses and homestays to stay at Chopta, ranging from as little as 100/- per person to 500 Rupees for a four bed room with attached bathroom. While some are also named ‘hotels’, don’t expect any standard of luxury. Duggalbitta is around 5 kms before Chopta and there are also a few nicely located camping resorts on the side of the road (approx. 1500 Rs. per tent). The dhaba owners on the road also offer dormitory type services by charging approx. 100 per bed when tourists start filling in on weekends.

Chopta region has a huge potential in adventure activities which includes trekking, camping, bird watching, etc. There are many treks and trails in Chopta region crossing jungle and grasslands. Chandrshilla/Tunganath & Devariyatal are the most famous trek routs in Chopta region. Because of abundance of birds Chopta is becoming popular among bird watchers. Slopes of Chopta region are also favorable to Snow Skiing where Government is planning to start snow related games in coming years.
