By now we have all seen the frenzy that took over the nation over the weekend that led to the massive emptying of shelves at supermarkets. Among the toilet paper, rice and instant noodles flying off the shelves, several observant netizens also shared pictures of condoms and adult toys being wiped out.

Making the most of the situation, was Durex who turned it into an advisory – of sorts (?) – on staying protected amidst the coronavirus situation. According to Durex’s Facebook post, the idea was inspired by a fan.

Meanwhile in Hong Kong, Durex also showed its sense of humour in light of a Hong Kong politician’s bizarre comments regarding the ongoing coronavirus situation. It mocked the comments made by the city’s health services chair, Ann Chiang Lai-wan who suggested that steaming a mask could disinfect it, despite being told by medical experts this was not advisable. Durex seized the opportunity by creating a tongue in cheek post on its official Facebook page reminding people not to reuse condoms. It then specifically asked people not to steam condoms as there is no correct way to reuse a condom, which is only meant for single use.

This is not the first time the brand has been quick to jump on the news wagon. In September last year, looking to lift the disappointment of both Singaporeans and Malaysians, Durex Singapore scheduled a Facebook event for 18 September titled “Liberate Singapore From The Haze With A Huge Blow Job!” According to the event description, Durex wanted consumers to join it in “what could be the biggest ever blowjob performed by a nation to a nation” where at exactly 3:30pm people were asked to “unite to huff and puff the haze back to where it came from,” the post said. Consumers were also urged to tag the brand on Facebook or Instagram and hashtag #blowforacause.
