Throwback to 25 Years of Lagaan

One of the most celebrated classics in Indian cinema, Lagaan (2001), marked its 25th anniversary on June 15. The film continues to be cherished for its innovative storyline, unforgettable music, compelling direction, and edge-of-the-seat climax. Along with its memorable ensemble cast, the actors portraying the village cricketers left a lasting impression, while several other performers also earned widespread appreciation. Among them was actress Gracy Singh, who played the beloved character of Gauri.

During Lagaan’s 20th anniversary celebrations in June 2021, Gracy Singh spoke in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama about how she landed the role that would become a defining moment in her career. Interestingly, her audition journey had a connection to the iconic song “Honthon Pe Aisi Baat” from Jewel Thief (1967), starring Vyjayanthimala.

Recalling the experience, Gracy shared, “While I was working on Amanat, a senior manager named Joshi ji often encouraged me to try my luck in Hindi films. It was through him that I learned about the auditions for Lagaan. In fact, he personally took me there. I had to audition twice before I was finally selected, and I was asked to perform on my favourite song, ‘Honthon Pe Aisi Baat’.”

She added, “I thoroughly enjoyed the screen test and was delighted when everything worked out and I got the role. Initially, I had no idea about the story or my character. Once I learned more about the film, I was thrilled because I’ve always loved period dramas and wanted to be part of one.”

Speaking about working with actor-producer Aamir Khan, Gracy said, “I was a huge fan of Aamir Khan, and he was incredibly inspiring. One of my screen tests was with him, so naturally I was nervous. But he would completely transform into Bhuvan. Whether during rehearsals or on location, he remained deeply immersed in his character, and the rest of us followed his lead. His dedication and hard work motivated everyone. Seeing his commitment filled the entire team with enthusiasm. In fact, it was a blessing to work with such a wonderful group of people.”

When asked whether she ever questioned director Ashutosh Gowariker about why Gauri never got a chance to play cricket alongside Bhuvan’s team, Gracy responded with a laugh, “No, I never mentioned that! Gauri was happy just watching the match. But yes, I do wish I had been able to play cricket in the film. I really wanted to, both as Gauri and as Gracy.”
