Jhol Momos Recipe

Nepal’s beloved Jhol Momos are not just another street snack—they are a warm, comforting bowl of flavour that combines juicy dumplings with a rich, aromatic broth. This signature “jhol,” or soupy base, is crafted using a blend of tomatoes, onions, chilies, and traditional spices. Once the broth is prepared, freshly steamed momos are soaked in it, allowing them to absorb every bit of its spicy, tangy goodness.

Ingredients Required for Jhol Momos

Minced chicken

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon garlic

1 tablespoon ginger

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon oil

1/2 cup tomato puree

1 teaspoon red chili powder

1 teaspoon turmeric

1 teaspoon pepper

Step-by-Step Method to Prepare Jhol Momos

1. Prepare the Filling

Start by taking the minced chicken in a mixing bowl. Season it generously with spices, garlic, and ginger. This gives the filling a deep, savoury flavour that stands out even after steaming.

2. Make the Dough for the Momos

Combine the all-purpose flour with salt and a little oil. Add water gradually to form a soft, smooth dough. Allow it to rest for a few minutes so the momos can be shaped easily.

3. Shape and Steam the Momos

Roll the dough into thin circles, place a spoonful of the spiced chicken filling in the center, and fold them into dumpling shapes. Steam the momos until they become tender and fully cooked.

4. Begin Preparing the Jhol (Soup Base)

Heat a pan and add the tomato puree. Cook it well so that its raw flavour disappears and a rich colour develops.

5. Add Spices and Build the Broth

To the cooked tomato base, add red chili powder, turmeric, pepper, salt, and a bit of ginger. Stir until the mixture starts to thicken. Pour in some water and allow it to come to a gentle boil, creating a smooth, flavourful soup.

6. Serve the Jhol Momos

Pour the hot jhol into a deep bowl and carefully place the steamed momos on top. Let them soak in the broth for a minute so the flavours blend beautifully. Your delicious, piping-hot Jhol Momos are now ready to be enjoyed!
