Hindi cinema is increasingly embracing sounds from the North, drawing inspiration from the Bhojpuri music industry. In recent years, several Bollywood films have either adapted popular Bhojpuri tracks or collaborated with Bhojpuri singers and artistes, bringing regional music into the mainstream spotlight. Here’s a look at some notable examples:
Chatni – Dhamaal 4
One of the latest Bhojpuri songs to be adapted for a Hindi film is the iconic Chatni, recreated for Dhamaal 4. Originally sung by Sundar Popo and released in 1969, the song has seen multiple versions over the years. The latest rendition is voiced by Bhojpuri singers Neelkamal Singh and Mamta Yadav and features Riteish Deshmukh, Arshad Warsi, Anjali Dinesh Anand, and Jaaved Jaaferi.
Ghis Ghis Ghis – Welcome To The Jungle
Akshay Kumar’s upcoming comedy Welcome To The Jungle also taps into Bhojpuri influences with Ghis Ghis Ghis. Sung by Vikram Montrose and Supriyaa Paathak, the track blends Bhojpuri and Hindi lyrics. Set against a rural backdrop, the song features Akshay alongside Bhojpuri actor Akshara Singh.
Panwadi – Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari
A fusion of Bhojpuri folk by Khesari Lal Yadav and Haryanvi folk by Masoom Sharma, Panwadi from Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari quickly became a fan favourite. Featuring Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor, Sanya Malhotra, and Rohit Saraf, the song emerged as a popular Holi anthem by combining traditional folk elements with a modern sound.
Touch Buddy – Dacoit
For the bilingual film Dacoit: A Love Story, Bhojpuri superstar Pawan Singh joined forces with Adivi Sesh and Jonita Gandhi for the promotional track Touch Buddy. Packed with rustic charm and desi flavour, the song showcased Adivi in a fresh avatar while highlighting a distinctly heartland aesthetic.
Affair – Maalik
After collaborating with Pawan Singh on Chumma, Rajkummar Rao once again teamed up with a Bhojpuri star for Maalik. This time, Khesari Lal Yadav lent his voice to Affair, a lively romantic number featuring Rajkummar Rao and Manushi Chhillar. The song captures the playful chemistry between the lead pair.
Where Did the Trend Begin?
The recent wave of Bhojpuri influence in Bollywood gained momentum with Aayi Nayi from Stree 2, starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor. Soon after, Rajkummar’s Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video featured Chumma, a recreated Bhojpuri hit that brought Pawan Singh together with Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri. These songs helped pave the way for a growing crossover between Bhojpuri music and mainstream Hindi cinema.
