Chives are a hardy perennial herb found across much of North America, Europe, and Asia. It is the common name of Allium schoenoprasum, which is an edible species of the Allium genus. Chives belong to the same family as garlic, shallots, leeks, and scallions. Apart from the regular chives, there is also Chinese chives or garlic chives (Allium tuberosum). Garlic chives are called so for its taste—it tastes like garlic.
Chives are an excellent source of iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, sulfur, copper, and manganese as well as vitamins A and C. They also provide healthy amounts of thiamin, niacin, zinc, phosphorus, and riboflavin.
