7 Major Signs Of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

Most women who have begun menstruating are familiar with the notorious PMS (premenstrual syndrome), right?
PMS refers to a collection of symptoms that occur between ovulation and the onset of a woman’s period. These symptoms can be both physical and emotional, triggered by the hormonal fluctuations that take place a few days before menstruation.
Some of the most common PMS symptoms include breast tenderness, bloating, fatigue, lower back and abdominal pain, irritability, mood swings, and anxiety.
But did you know there’s another condition closely related to PMS? It’s called PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder), and it can affect certain women—often going unnoticed or mistaken for severe PMS. While not every woman experiences PMDD, it is fairly common, especially among working women.
PMDD shares similarities with PMS, which is why many women ignore it and don’t seek medical help. However, the key difference lies in the severity of the symptoms—PMDD can trigger intense emotional and physical distress, sometimes even leading to depression.
Here are some signs of PMDD you should watch out for:

# Extreme Bloating
Mild bloating is normal during PMS, but with PMDD, it can become excessive and painfully uncomfortable.
# Chronic Fatigue
If you feel extreme tiredness just before your period, despite not overexerting yourself, it may signal PMDD.
# Severe Mood Swings
Mood swings are common in PMS, but in PMDD they can escalate to aggression, self-harm, or hostility toward others.

# Panic Attacks
Unexpected and intense panic attacks right before your period could be linked to PMDD.
# IBS-like Symptoms
Frequent digestive issues like constipation or diarrhea before your period can sometimes be a sign of PMDD.

# Noticeable Weight Gain
While slight weight gain is typical during PMS, PMDD may cause significant and sudden weight changes.
# Depression
Persistent depressive symptoms before your period are one of the most serious indicators of PMDD.
