6 Tips Every Solo Women Traveler Must Keep in Mind

Travelling can be a respite from the hum drum of the regular life. While some people prefer to do it with family and friends, some people like flying solo. Solo trips can be a good way of taking some time to nurture yourself with new experiences.

More and more women are increasingly discovering the joy of solo travels. Women may be driven by various motivations to travel alone. Whether it is to enjoy the independence to do what they want, or developing self-confidence by challenging one’s limits or simply the fear of missing out while waiting for others to agree to a travel plan, girls just want to have some fun! However, when it comes to solo travels, women travellers need to be mindful of certain things to make sure that they are able to safely enjoy the place and the experiences.

We have put together a list of tips that will help women travellers make their trip worth their while without any stress:

- Plan ahead and your first night well. When flying solo, it is important to have a definitive intent of visiting a particular place. It is best if you do your research beforehand and chalk out the things you would like to cover from the popular attractions of a place. At minimum, have a place to rest your head on the first night of every destination on your trip and plan to arrive by mid-afternoon. It’s important to have the time to find your hotel or hostel in daylight and time to change your accommodation if you determine that this is not the place for you.

- Visualize the necessities but no more. Traveling solo does require attention to details. Visualizing how the practical aspects of your trip fit together, from departure to transfers to accommodation, help you travel with less stress. However, avoid building too many expectations and be open to taking up opportunities as and when they come.

- Pack light. You’re going to save money and be more mobile if you pack light. It requires a bit more planning to have a wardrobe that stretches from hiking boots to high heels but it can be done. Choose a base colour (black, brown, beige, navy), a contrast colour (white, beige…) and a colour or two to accessorize and pull it all together

- Keep your accommodation to yourself. No matter the place you are visiting, your safety is your responsibility. Although it is advisable to mingle with the locals, sharing vitals of your stay is not a good idea. Your accommodation is your safe haven. Don’t tell people where you’re staying. If they ask, it’s easy to be vague.

- Protect your documents, cards and cash. Keep your passport and other important documents secure. Have backup copies on you and at home with your trusted contact. It helps to carry them everywhere with you, however, it is best to do so discretely. Make sure you keep spare change and a card for regular use in an easily accessible section of your bag so as to avoid curious eyes from scanning your belongings every time you open your bag.
