7 Must Visit Tourist Spots In Tamil Nadu

Lying across the Bay of Bengal, Tamil Nadu boasts of its magnificent history that narrates the glorious tales of the rise and fall of various dynasties – the Cholas, the Cheras and the Pallavas. Each city vaunts of its enriching customs and traditions that these dynasties have bequeathed to the place. Strolling across palm trees, banana plantations, and rice fields, I was able to find some rejuvenating yoga and meditation retreats that bestowed a relaxing and soothing experience.

Here are some of the most mesmerising sightseeing places in Tamil Nadu that I explored during my excursion which might help you to plan your upcoming trip: –

# Chennai

Rechristened as Chennai, Madras is a must-visit destination if you are in Tamil Nadu. Also known as the ‘Cultural Capital of South India,’ Chennai is a perfect blend of millennialism and conventionalize. I was amazed at the sight of stunning temples immersed in the city’s culture, British-era museums that narrated the tale of Chennai’s past, and the rejuvenating Marina Beach. So, if you are planning a trip to the state, you must include these spots in your Tamil Nadu tourism package. Apart from this, I was also able to relish some of Chennai’s culinary delicacies like Mulligatawny Soup, Sundal, Nethili fry, Mysore Pak, Masala Dosai, and the ever-famous filter coffee.

# Puducherry

Colloquially known as Pondicherry, Puducherry is one of the nine Union Territories of India. Also known as the ‘French Riviera of the East’, Puducherry is one of the best places to reconnoitre the French culture, traditions, and cuisine. Walking around the enthralling streets of the French Quarter of Pondicherry, I came across some of the most vibrant houses that depicted French architecture. The mustard-coloured houses bestowed a scenic view, giving me an astounding backdrop for a few clicks. Later, I stopped for a coffee break at one of the cafes nearby and relished some of the French snacks. Some of my personal favourites are the French Quarter of Pondicherry, Promenade Beach and Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Situated at the southernmost tip of the Indian peninsula, I am sure that Kanyakumari would definitely be on your bucket list. If you haven’t, then include it right away. Once known as Cape Comorin, Kanyakumari is hedged by mountains and fenced by seashores, making the coastal town a must-visit. Apart from its scenic location, I loved exploring the magnificent temples, stunning churches, and tranquil beaches here. Some of the must-visit places according to my experience are Our Lady of Ransom Church, Kanyakumari Beach, and Mahatma Gandhi Mandapam.

# Kodaikanal

Located in a surreal area filled with granite cliffs, lakes, waterfalls, grassy hills, and verdant valleys, Kodaikanal was an impeccable experience for me. Nestled amidst the Palani Hills, Kodaikanal presented a picturesque view of the cloud-capped mountains and crystal clear lakes. To witness the first rays of the sun, I trekked all the way to the hilltop, exploring the lush green valleys, the sparkling waterfalls and everything in between. Some of the best sightseeing places in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu are Coaker’s Walk, Kodaikanal Lake, and Silver Cascade Falls.

# Madurai

Madurai is the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu and one of the oldest inhabited cities in India. The history of Madurai is what intrigued me the most. Ruled by the Pandya kings, the city is constructed in the form of a lotus and is thus known as the Lotus City. The Meenakshi Amman Temple here is truly enchanting. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Meenakshi with a sanctum for her consort, Sundareshwarar. I also visited some of the most renowned tourist spots of Madurai like Thirumalai Nayak Palace, Gandhi Museum, and Kazimar Big Mosque and Maqbara, all of which were fascinating in their own way. # Coonoor

If you wish to spend some leisure time in the lap of nature, as I did, then Coonoor is a must-visit! One of the three Nilgiri hill stations, Coonoor is known for its lush environs and picturesque views of the mountains. One of my best experiences at Coonoor was the toy train ride by one of the oldest mountain railway networks in India – Nilgiri Mountain Railway. It gives me pride to have explored one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India. With this, I was able to tick another item off my travel bucket-list! Some of my personal favourites from Coonor are Lambs Rock, Dolphins Nose, St. Catherine Falls. These places are integral to what tourism in Tamil Nadu has on offer.

# Vellore

Another city that is filled with some of the best sightseeing places in Tamil Nadu is Vellore. Located on the banks of Palar Vellore River, the city was a standing example of Tamil Nadu’s rich culture and traditions. My visit to the Vellore Fort and St. John’s Church was quite enjoyable and enlightening. Colloquially called the Fort City, the architecture of the Vellore Fort was intricate and elaborate. Other monuments, forts, and temples told a lot about the different ruling dynasties like the Pallavas, the Cholas, the Vijayanagara, the Rashtrakuta, the Carnatic and the British. Some of the must-visit tourist places in Tamil Nadu are Vellore Fort, St John’s Church, Jalagandeeshwar Temple, Jalakantesvara Temple and the Archaeological Survey of India Museum.
