PAN Card: You Could Be Fined Rs 10,000 for This Mistake

A PAN card is a vital legal document in India. According to Section 272B of the Income Tax Act, an individual is not allowed to hold more than one PAN card. Possessing multiple PAN cards can lead to a penalty of ₹10,000. To prevent such issues, it is essential to surrender or deactivate the extra PAN card. There are two methods to do this: online and offline.

How to Surrender Your PAN Card Online

- Visit the official NSDL website: NSDL PAN Services

- In the “Application Type” field, select ‘Changes or Correction in existing PAN data’.

- Fill in all necessary details such as category, full name, and mobile number, then submit.

- A token number will be sent to your registered email address. Keep it safe for future reference.

- Click Continue on the PAN application form.

- Scan and upload required documents, enter your personal details, and click Next.

- Select the checkbox indicating how many PAN cards you want to cancel and proceed.

- Upload proofs including your date of birth, address proof, and PAN card.

- After completing all steps, a payment option will appear. You can pay using debit/credit card or net banking.

- Once the payment is successful, a confirmation slip will be generated.

Offline Procedure for Surrendering PAN Card

Obtain the PAN card surrender application form from the nearest PAN center or download it from: Income Tax PAN Form

Fill in all required details and mention the PAN card number to be surrendered.

Submit proof of date of birth, address proof, the surrendered PAN card, and the filled application form.

After submission, you will receive a receipt. Your PAN card will be blocked within 10–15 days.

Important Note

In the unfortunate event of a person’s death, deactivating their PAN card is crucial for financial and security reasons. While surrendering a PAN card is not legally mandatory, failing to do so may result in complications in the future, including tax issues and identity-related problems.
