While most people wrap up New Year celebrations in January, in Manipur, the sense of a fresh beginning arrives a little later. Celebrated as Cheiraoba, this occasion is not about loud parties but about cleaning homes, sharing meals, and embracing a more meaningful reset in life.
When Is Cheiraoba in 2026?
In 2026, Cheiraoba will be observed on April 14 (Tuesday). The date usually falls in April, and sometimes in late March, as it follows the traditional calendar of the Meitei community, which aligns with natural and seasonal cycles rather than the Gregorian calendar.
What Is Cheiraoba?
Also known as Sajibu Cheiraoba, this festival marks the Manipuri New Year and is primarily celebrated by the Meitei community. It signifies both the end of the previous year and the beginning of a new one. Unlike many other festivals, Cheiraoba is quiet and personal, focusing more on inner reflection and family bonding than grand celebrations.
Why Do Manipuris Celebrate New Year in April?
Cheiraoba is celebrated in April because it follows a traditional lunisolar calendar instead of the widely used January 1 system. The new year begins in the month of Sajibu, which falls between March and April. This timing is closely linked to nature, as April marks the arrival of spring—a season of renewal and rejuvenation.
It also coincides with the beginning of the agricultural cycle, when new farming activities begin. Similarly, other Indian festivals like Ugadi, Baisakhi, and Gudi Padwa also celebrate the New Year around this time, reflecting a shared cultural connection to seasonal change and growth.
Significance of Cheiraoba
Cheiraoba is more than just a date—it represents a way of thinking and living:
Renewal and cleansing: Homes are thoroughly cleaned to welcome positivity and new beginnings.
Spiritual connection: Special foods are prepared and offered to deities and ancestral spirits for blessings.
Growth and prosperity: A unique tradition of climbing nearby hills symbolizes progress and success in life.
Family bonding: The festival strengthens relationships through shared meals, prayers, and customs.
How Cheiraoba Is Celebrated
The celebrations are simple yet deeply meaningful:
Cleaning and decorating homes
Preparing traditional dishes (first offered to deities)
Family feasts and gatherings
Ritual prayers and offerings
Climbing hills as a symbol of growth and good fortune
Even outside Manipur, communities continue to observe these traditions, preserving the true spirit and cultural essence of Cheiraoba.
