Hemorrhoids, commonly known as piles, are swollen and inflamed veins in the lower rectum and anus. They are a common condition that can affect people of all ages, although they are more frequently seen in adults. Piles can develop internally inside the rectum or externally around the anus, causing symptoms such as pain, itching, discomfort, swelling, and bleeding during bowel movements.
Several factors can contribute to the development of piles, including chronic constipation, prolonged sitting, straining during bowel movements, obesity, pregnancy, a low-fiber diet, and lack of physical activity. While piles are usually not a serious medical condition, they can significantly impact a person's comfort and quality of life if left untreated.
Fortunately, mild cases of piles can often be managed through lifestyle changes, dietary modifications, and home remedies. However, persistent or severe symptoms may require medical evaluation and treatment to prevent complications and ensure proper relief.
# Increase fiber intake
Fiber softens stool and reduces pressure during bowel movements.
Good options:
Fruits: papaya, pears, apples, bananas
Vegetables: spinach, broccoli, carrots
Whole grains and oats
Beans and lentils
Psyllium husk (isabgol) with water
Aim for plenty of water along with fiber.
# Drink more water
Try to drink 2–3 liters daily unless a doctor has restricted your fluids.
# Warm sitz bath
Sit in warm water for 10–15 minutes:
2–3 times daily
Especially after bowel movements
This can reduce pain and itching.
# Cold compress
Applying an ice pack wrapped in cloth for 10 minutes may reduce swelling.
# Avoid straining
Don’t sit on the toilet too long
Don’t force bowel movements
Go when you feel the urge
# Exercise regularly
Walking and light activity improve bowel function and reduce constipation.
# Aloe vera or coconut oil
Some people find relief from irritation by applying a small amount externally. Avoid using on broken skin or if irritation develops.
# Avoid spicy foods and alcohol
These may worsen irritation in some people.
