3 DIY Ways To Use Alum for Skin Whitening

Alum, commonly known as fitkari, has been used in traditional skincare routines for generations because of its astringent and cleansing properties. It is often added to DIY beauty treatments with the belief that it can help reduce excess oil, tighten the appearance of pores and make the skin look brighter and more refreshed. This has made alum a popular ingredient in home remedies aimed at improving dullness, tanning and uneven-looking skin.

However, alum should not be considered a natural skin-whitening treatment that can permanently change your complexion. At best, it may provide a temporary tightening or refreshed appearance. Overuse or applying concentrated alum directly to the skin can cause dryness, irritation and sensitivity. Therefore, if you choose to include alum in a DIY skincare routine, it is important to dilute it, use it sparingly and perform a patch test first.

Alum (fitkari) is traditionally used as an astringent, but it does not permanently whiten or lighten your natural skin colour. It may temporarily make skin feel tighter and can help reduce excess oil, but frequent or concentrated use can cause dryness, irritation and potentially worsen pigmentation.

If you want to try it safely, here are gentler DIY options:

1. Alum + Rose Water

Take a very small pinch of alum powder.
Mix with 1–2 teaspoons of rose water.
Apply a thin layer for 5–10 minutes.
Rinse with cool water and moisturise.
Use once a week initially, not daily.

2. Alum + Aloe Vera

Mix a tiny pinch of finely powdered alum with 1 tablespoon pure aloe-vera gel.
Apply for 5–10 minutes and rinse.
Follow with moisturiser.
This is a gentler option if your skin tends to feel dry.

3. Alum + Curd

Mix 1 tablespoon plain curd with an extremely small pinch of alum.
Apply for about 5 minutes.
Rinse thoroughly and moisturise.
Avoid this if you have sensitive or irritated skin.
