DIY Magical Ayurvedic Oil To Get Great Hair

Quite often we underestimate the power of home remedies and are ready to pay for expensive hair care solutions by overlooking what can be easily achieved at home. In South India, it is common knowledge that Curry leaves and Coconut oil are great for hair health. Coconut oil nourishes and revitalizes dry and damaged hair and also has a cooling effect. And also are Mehendi / Henna and Methi / Fenugreek seeds known to be excellent hair and scalp conditioners respectively. Amla / Nellikayi (Indian Gooseberry) is considered a Tridoshic food in Ayurveda, meaning it balances all the three doshasVatha, Pittha and Kapha. Brahmi is a growth promoter with regenerative qualities other than being a great memory booster. Hibiscus strengthens the hair follicles. Sesame seeds are rich with essential fatty acids, stimulates hair growth and removes toxins. Agase / Agasthya leaves (Agathi) with white flowers have a calming effect for stress / anxiety control. Ridge Gourd helps to enrich the hair roots and restore the pigment / prevent premature greying.

This Homemade Herbal Oil incorporates the goodness of all the above said medicinal ingredients. Apart from being great for you, making it at home will also give you a huge sense of satisfaction that you have taken a positive step in the right direction.

Hair is an indicator of overall health. So do look into other factors such as consuming wholesome food, drinking plenty of water, exercising till you sweat, avoiding processed foods, stress and anxiety control in the form of Yoga, addressing hormonal changes if any and not succumbing to crash diets. The first casualty of crash diets which nobody tells you, is Hair. There is no magic cure for hair loss. You have to apply this oil regularly, persistently over at least a 3 month period.

Hair Oil for dandruff and hair fall control

Servings: 250 ml

Ingredients

250 ml good quality Coconut oil (Sesame oil can also be used in place of Coconut Oil.)
12 (handful) Hibiscus flowers / Daasavaala
10-12 stalks (1 cup) Curry leaves / Karibevu
1/2 cup Henna leaves / GorantiSoppu
1 cup Brahmi leaves / Ondelaga Indian Pennywort
1 tbsp Agasthya /AgaseSoppu Humming Bird Tree leaves (I have used dried leaves)
3 Amla / Indian Gooseberry up to 5 cut into small pieces, seeds removed
4 slices Ridge gourd / Heerekayi
2 tbsp Fenugreek seeds / Menthya
1 tbsp black sesame seeds

Instructions

For the Herbal oil:

1. Makes sure all the leaves and Amla are washed and towel dried well to have no moisture. Trim the pollen part of hibiscus flowers.
2. Heat coconut oil preferably in an iron Kadai on low-medium flame.
3. When it is hot, add Amla pieces, Ridge gourd slices and stir well with a dry ladle. When the sizzling stops, add the fenugreek seeds and sesame seeds followed by all the leaves one by one.
4. Simmer for 15-20 mins until infused while stirring intermittently.
5. Hibiscus will turn pale and the oil will turn olive green.
6. Remove from heat and let it cool. Strain into a clean dry bottle once cooled.
7. The remnant solids can be added to plain coconut oil to infuse and used later.
8. Store the airtight oil bottle in a cool, dry spot.
9. Apply regularly.

How to use:

1. Apply to the scalp using your fingertips in circular massaging motion.
2. Let is soak for an hour, then wash your hair. You may also let it soak overnight.
3. Use regularly.
4. You will have to do this regularly for 3 months to see results. Make it a habit by including in your night routine.

Notes

When the weather is cooler, it is natural for the coconut oil to solidify.
