Bharat Bhagya Vidhata box office day 1: Kangana Ranaut’s film opens at Rs 1 crore amid modest start despite positive reviews

Kangana Ranaut’s latest release Bharat Bhagya Vidhata has opened to a subdued response at the box office, earning around ₹1 crore on its first day. Despite receiving encouraging word of mouth from early viewers, the film could only manage an overall 11% occupancy across approximately 2,181 shows nationwide. As per data reported by Sacnilk, the Manoj Tapadia directorial was screened across 301 shows in the Delhi-NCR region and about 171 shows in Mumbai, indicating a fairly wide release but limited audience turnout. The film also features Girija Oak, Smita Tambe, and Esha Dey in key supporting roles.

The film arrived in cinemas alongside Main Vaapas Aaunga, starring Diljit Dosanjh and directed by Imtiaz Ali, and Governor, featuring Manoj Bajpayee and helmed by Chinmay D Mandlekar. Interestingly, all three releases saw a similar opening-day trend, reflecting a muted box office environment. Main Vaapas Aaunga registered a slightly higher collection of ₹1.15 crore from 2,302 shows, also maintaining an occupancy rate of 11%. Meanwhile, Governor earned approximately ₹90 lakh from 1,427 shows and recorded a comparatively better occupancy of 15%, despite lower overall earnings.

Kangana Ranaut’s box office journey has been under scrutiny for several years now, as her last major commercial success dates back to Tanu Weds Manu Returns in 2015. Since then, she has featured in around a dozen films over the past decade, many of which failed to achieve significant commercial traction. Even ambitious projects like Thalaivii and Emergency, which carried strong subject matter and pre-release attention, struggled to convert buzz into box office numbers. While films such as Simran and Rangoon earned appreciation for performances and storytelling, they were unable to draw large-scale audience turnout.

Her most recent release prior to this was Emergency, which opened with ₹2.5 crore and eventually wrapped up its theatrical run at around ₹23.81 crore. Despite considerable media attention and political discourse surrounding the film before release, its theatrical performance remained below expectations, reflecting the ongoing challenge of converting visibility into sustained box office success.

Going forward, all eyes will be on whether Bharat Bhagya Vidhata can improve its performance over the weekend, especially if positive reviews begin to translate into higher footfalls. The film, written and directed by Manoj Tapadia, is produced under Kangana Ranaut’s Manikarnika Films in collaboration with Pen Movies. It draws inspiration from the courageous incidents that took place at Mumbai’s Cama Hospital during the 26/11 terror attacks, a sensitive historical backdrop that the film attempts to dramatize on screen.
