Meta Unveils New Threads Features as Platform Crosses 500 Million Monthly Users

Meta-owned Threads has crossed the milestone of 500 million monthly active users, the company announced on June 16. Alongside the achievement, Meta introduced a range of community-focused features and personalised feed controls designed to boost engagement and enhance the overall user experience.

Meta said the platform’s growth has been fueled by communities built around common interests such as books, sports, music, and parenting. To support these growing groups, the company is expanding tools that make it easier for users to discover, join, and interact within communities.

One of the key updates is the official rollout of the Communities feature, which is now exiting its beta phase. Threads is also launching a new Communities Hub, enabling users to easily browse and switch between communities directly from the main menu. Additionally, dedicated community icons will improve visibility and navigation across the platform.

The company is also introducing Community Progress, a feature that helps users track when a discussion topic is nearing the threshold to become an official community. It will also provide guidance on how members can contribute to reaching that milestone. Meanwhile, the Community Champions programme is being expanded to recognise and reward a wider range of active contributors.

To make communities more accessible globally, Meta is adding native-language tags in selected markets, starting with Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. The company also plans to broaden access to Live Chats over the coming weeks, introducing features such as co-hosting and the ability to quote live chat moments directly to users’ feeds.

In a separate update, Threads is launching a new content personalisation feature called “Your Algo.” Building on the “Dear Algo” feedback system introduced earlier this year, the tool allows users to fine-tune content recommendations according to their preferences.

With Your Algo, users can choose to see more or less content on specific topics and set those preferences to last for one, three, or seven days. Unlike Dear Algo, these adjustments remain private and are visible only to the individual user.

Meta said both Dear Algo and Your Algo will be accessible through a unified control hub. The new personalisation feature is initially rolling out in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.

According to the company, these latest enhancements reflect its ongoing efforts to refine Threads based on user feedback while encouraging deeper community engagement across the platform.
