7 Home Remedies To Get Relief from Chest Pain Due To Cough

Chest pain due to cough can be uncomfortable and worrying, especially when frequent or forceful coughing puts extra strain on the muscles around the chest and ribs. A persistent cough may also irritate the airways and make the chest feel sore, tight, or painful. In many mild cases, the discomfort improves as the cough settles and the body gets adequate rest and hydration.

However, chest pain should not always be attributed to coughing alone. Conditions such as respiratory infections, asthma, acid reflux, or other underlying problems can also cause chest discomfort. Understanding the possible cause is important before trying home remedies. If the pain is severe, persistent, associated with breathing difficulty, dizziness, sweating, or coughing up blood, medical attention should be sought promptly.

# Warm fluids

Sip warm water, herbal tea, soup, or warm lemon water.
This can soothe the throat and help loosen mucus.

# Honey

Try 1 teaspoon of honey, either directly or mixed into warm water/tea.
Honey may reduce coughing and throat irritation. Do not give honey to children under 1 year.

# Steam or humidified air

Take a warm shower or use a cool-mist humidifier to keep the air moist.
This may make coughing and congestion more comfortable.

# Rest your chest

Frequent forceful coughing can strain the muscles between the ribs.
Rest and avoid strenuous activity for a few days.

# Warm compress

If the pain feels like muscle soreness and is worse when you cough, a comfortably warm compress over the painful area may provide temporary relief.

# Avoid smoke and irritants

Stay away from cigarette smoke, incense, strong perfumes and dusty environments because these can aggravate coughing.

# Stay hydrated

Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, especially if you have thick mucus.

When you should NOT rely on home remedies

Get urgent medical attention if the chest pain is new or unexplained, severe, persistent, or accompanied by shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness/fainting, pain spreading to the arm/jaw/back, rapid heartbeat, or coughing up blood.

Also see a doctor if you have fever, worsening cough, wheezing, difficulty breathing, or a cough lasting more than about 3 weeks.
