The Lord is worshipped in different forms across various places, each believed to fulfill the diverse needs of devotees. The Motha Maruti Hanuman Temple in Lonar, Maharashtra, stands out for its unique belief that Lord Hanuman has subdued Shanidev (Planet Saturn). Let’s take a closer look at the temple and its spiritual importance.
Significance of Motha Maruti Hanuman Temple
Located in Lonar in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra, the Motha Maruti Hanuman Temple is a privately owned shrine known for its distinctive features among Hanuman temples. What makes it truly special is the rare depiction of Lord Hanuman in a reclining posture.
The idol of Lord Hanuman is carved from magnetic rock. For many years, it remained covered with layers of sindoor, which obscured its original form. Once a significant amount of sindoor was removed, devotees were able to clearly see the true structure of the idol.
Lord Hanuman, known as Vayu Putra, is believed to take many forms and is worshipped in various manifestations such as Prasanna Hanuman, Veera Hanuman, Panchamukhi Hanuman, and others with multiple arms and faces. However, in this temple, he is seen lying down—an uncommon representation found in only a few places.
The massive reclining idol, believed to date back to the 8th century, measures about 9 feet in length. His right foot rests on the ground, while beneath his left foot lies Shanidev, held captive by Hanuman’s tail. His left hand is in a meditative japa मुद्रा, while the right hand is raised in blessing.
According to a sacred verse:
Budhir Balam Yasho Dhairyam
Nirbhayatvam Arogataa
Ajaatyam Vaak Patutvam Cha
Hanumat Smaranaat Bhavet
Meditating on Lord Hanuman is believed to bless devotees with wisdom, strength, courage, fearlessness, good health, determination, and eloquence. At the Motha Maruti Temple, since Shanidev is believed to be under Hanuman’s control, devotees are said to be relieved from the adverse effects of Saturn and other planetary influences.
Visiting this temple is considered highly auspicious, and devotees seek blessings here for protection, peace, and prosperity.
