10 Home Remedies To Treat Tanning In Kids Naturally

Children often spend considerable time outdoors, whether they are playing, going to school, travelling or participating in sports. Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause the skin to produce more melanin, leading to a darker or uneven appearance commonly referred to as tanning. Children's skin can be more sensitive than adult skin, so harsh scrubs, strong bleaching agents and concentrated DIY treatments should be avoided.
For children, the main focus should be on preventing further sun exposure, keeping the skin moisturised and allowing the tan to gradually fade naturally. Gentle ingredients commonly found at home may help soothe and moisturise the skin, but they should not be expected to remove a tan immediately.
1. Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe vera can help soothe skin that feels warm, dry or irritated after spending time in the sun.
How to use:
Take a small amount of pure, fragrance-free aloe vera gel.
Apply a thin layer to clean skin.
Leave it on for 15–20 minutes if using a washable product, then rinse gently.
Alternatively, use a child-safe moisturising aloe product according to its label.
Tip: Always perform a patch test first, particularly if your child has sensitive skin.
2. Cucumber for a Cooling Effect
Cucumber contains a high amount of water and can provide a cooling, refreshing sensation on sun-exposed skin.
How to use:
Wash and grate a fresh cucumber.
Apply the juice or pulp gently to the skin.
Leave it for around 10 minutes.
Rinse with cool or lukewarm water and pat dry.
Avoid rubbing the skin while applying or removing it.
3. Plain Yogurt
Plain, unsweetened yogurt can provide moisture and a cooling sensation. However, its effect should be considered soothing rather than a proven tan-removal treatment.
How to use:
Apply a very thin layer of plain, unsweetened yogurt.
Leave it on for about 5–10 minutes.
Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
Follow with a gentle moisturiser.
Do not use yogurt if your child has a dairy-related skin sensitivity or if it causes irritation.
4. Oatmeal and Water Paste
Oatmeal is a gentle option for helping soothe dry or irritated skin.
How to use:
Finely grind plain oats into a powder.
Mix them with enough water to make a soft paste.
Apply gently without scrubbing.
Leave it for 5–10 minutes.
Rinse with lukewarm water.
This is particularly useful when the skin feels dry after outdoor exposure.
5. Coconut Oil for Dry Skin
Coconut oil can help moisturise dry skin, but it does not remove tanning or protect the skin adequately from UV rays.
How to use:
Apply a very small amount to dry areas.
Massage very gently.
Use preferably after bathing or before bedtime.
Avoid applying oil over irritated, broken or sunburned skin.
6. Milk Compress
A cool compress can provide temporary comfort when the skin feels warm after outdoor exposure.
How to use:
Soak a clean, soft cloth in cool milk.
Place it gently on the affected area for a few minutes.
Wash the skin afterwards with plain water.
For young children or children with sensitive skin, plain cool water is a simpler and safer option.
7. Honey for Moisture
Honey has moisturising properties and can leave dry skin feeling softer.
How to use:
Apply a very thin layer of plain honey to a small area.
Leave it for about 5–10 minutes.
Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
Do not use honey if your child has previously reacted to it. Keep it away from the eyes and mouth.
8. Use a Gentle Moisturiser Daily
Moisturising does not directly remove a tan, but it supports the skin barrier and can prevent dryness and irritation.
Choose a fragrance-free, child-friendly moisturiser and apply it after bathing while the skin is still slightly damp.
9. Cool Water Bath
If the skin has become warm after playing outdoors, a cool or lukewarm bath can help make the child more comfortable.
How to do it:
Use lukewarm or comfortably cool water rather than hot water.
Avoid vigorous rubbing with a loofah or towel.
Pat the skin dry gently.
Apply a moisturiser afterwards.
10. Give the Skin Time to Recover
A tan generally fades gradually as the skin naturally renews itself. Trying to remove it quickly can cause irritation and make the skin look more uneven.
Encourage children to:
Stay hydrated.
Eat a balanced diet containing fruits and vegetables.
Get adequate sleep.
Avoid unnecessary prolonged sun exposure.
