Anurag Kashyap Hails Main Vaapas Aaunga, Calls Imtiaz Ali's Film a ‘Heartbreaking Crime’

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has showered praise on Imtiaz Ali's latest directorial venture, Main Vaapas Aaunga. Taking to Instagram, Anurag lauded the film and its creative team, affectionately referring to Imtiaz as “Muttonkhor.” In his heartfelt post, he celebrated the filmmaker’s work and encouraged audiences to experience the film on the big screen.

On Tuesday, Anurag shared a black-and-white photograph of Imtiaz and wrote, “The fresh brand new @imtiazaliofficial. After his first film Chamkila, his sophomore film Main Vaapas Aaunga is now playing in cinemas. Go watch it. I love you, Muttonkhor. Keep inspiring us and breaking our hearts.”

He also praised the team behind the film while jokingly asking Imtiaz to stop “stealing” his favourite collaborators. “And stop taking away all my favourite collaborators; the rest of us have films to make too,” he quipped, before congratulating contributors including cinematographer Sylvester Fonseca, music composer A. R. Rahman, lyricist Irshad Kamil, and other members of the crew.

Fans quickly reacted to the post, appreciating Anurag’s support for the film. While one user urged more filmmakers to promote Main Vaapas Aaunga, another joked that the “Muttonkhor” remark felt personal. Several viewers also praised the film, calling it a memorable cinematic experience.

Earlier, Anurag had voiced concerns over the way cinema schedules are allocated, arguing that locally made films often struggle to secure favourable show timings while bigger releases dominate screens. Referring to Main Vaapas Aaunga and other films, he questioned how regional and independent cinema could grow without stronger theatrical support.

About Main Vaapas Aaunga

Directed by Imtiaz Ali, Main Vaapas Aaunga is a romantic drama featuring Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina, Sharvari and Banita Sandhu in pivotal roles.

The film follows 95-year-old Ishar Singh Grewal (Naseeruddin Shah), who suffers a stroke while attempting to travel to Sargodha in Pakistan. As his memories begin to fade, his grandson Nirvair (Diljit Dosanjh) returns from England to be with him. Through Ishar’s fragmented recollections of life before Partition, Nirvair gradually uncovers a long-buried family history. The mystery of what is preventing Ishar from finding peace in his final days forms the emotional core of the narrative.

Released on June 12, the film has crossed ₹6 crore at the box office so far and has shown positive momentum, with its first Monday collection surpassing its opening-day earnings.
