10 Home Remedies To Help You Get Relief from Wisdom Tooth Pain

Wisdom tooth pain is a common dental problem that can occur when the last set of molars begins to emerge, usually during the late teens or early twenties. Unlike other teeth, wisdom teeth often do not have enough space to grow properly, which can lead to pressure, gum swelling, tenderness, jaw discomfort and difficulty chewing. In some cases, a wisdom tooth may become partially trapped beneath the gum or grow at an unusual angle, increasing the risk of inflammation and infection.

Although wisdom tooth pain can be uncomfortable, several simple home remedies may help provide temporary relief and soothe irritated gums. Warm salt-water rinses, cold compresses, gentle oral hygiene and soft foods are among the commonly used measures. However, these remedies do not address underlying dental problems such as impaction, decay or infection. Persistent, severe or recurring pain should therefore be evaluated by a dentist.

1. Rinse with Warm Salt Water

A warm salt-water rinse is one of the simplest ways to soothe irritated gums around a wisdom tooth.

How to use it:

Add ½ teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water.
Swish it gently around the painful area for about 20–30 seconds.
Spit it out rather than swallowing.
Repeat 2–3 times a day, particularly after meals.

Salt water can help clean the area and temporarily reduce gum irritation.

2. Apply a Cold Compress

If wisdom tooth pain is accompanied by swelling, a cold compress may help numb the area and reduce discomfort.

How to use it:

Wrap an ice pack or a few ice cubes in a clean cloth.
Hold it against the outside of your cheek for about 15–20 minutes.
Remove it and allow your skin to rest before repeating.

Never place ice directly against your skin.

3. Keep the Area Clean

Partially erupted wisdom teeth can create a small pocket where food and bacteria collect. Gentle cleaning can therefore help prevent additional irritation.

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and carefully clean around the wisdom tooth. Avoid aggressive brushing or poking the gum with sharp objects.

If you use dental floss or an interdental cleaner, be gentle around the painful area.

4. Try a Warm Compress

For some people, gentle warmth can be soothing, particularly when the discomfort feels like a dull ache.

Place a comfortably warm—not hot—cloth against the outside of the cheek for around 15–20 minutes.

If warmth appears to increase swelling or throbbing, discontinue it and use a cold compress instead.

5. Choose Soft Foods

Chewing hard or crunchy foods can put additional pressure on a painful wisdom tooth.

For a few days, choose foods such as:

Khichdi
Soft rice
Dal
Oatmeal
Yogurt
Smooth soups
Mashed vegetables
Soft scrambled eggs

Try to chew on the opposite side of your mouth.

6. Avoid Foods That Irritate the Area

When the gum around a wisdom tooth is sore, avoid foods that can aggravate it, including:

Very spicy foods
Extremely hot foods and drinks
Hard or crunchy foods
Sticky foods
Very sugary foods
Foods containing small particles that can lodge around the tooth

Rinse your mouth gently with water after eating.

7. Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Pain may tempt you to avoid brushing near the affected tooth, but poor oral hygiene can allow plaque and bacteria to accumulate.

Brush your teeth twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste. Clean the wisdom-tooth area gently rather than scrubbing it aggressively.

8. Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough water helps keep the mouth clean and prevents dryness. Choose plain water and avoid excessive sugary drinks while the tooth is painful.

9. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief

If home measures aren't enough, an over-the-counter pain reliever such as paracetamol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen may help, provided it is safe for you to take.

Follow the dosage instructions on the package and consider your existing medicines and health conditions. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum or tooth, as this can irritate or burn the tissue.

10. Avoid Unproven or Irritating Remedies

Some commonly suggested remedies can actually irritate the gums. Avoid putting concentrated essential oils, undiluted clove oil, alcohol, aspirin or other chemicals directly on the painful gum.

Clove oil is often promoted as a home remedy for toothache, but concentrated clove oil can irritate oral tissues if used improperly. A dental examination is preferable if the pain is significant or recurring.
