8 Home Remedies to Treat Cough During Monsoon

Monsoon brings much-needed relief from the scorching summer heat, but the season also comes with a higher risk of cough, cold, sore throat, and other respiratory problems. Frequent changes in temperature, increased humidity, damp surroundings, dust, mold, and the spread of seasonal infections can irritate the respiratory system and trigger coughing.

A cough is the body's natural way of clearing mucus, irritants, or infections from the airways. While an occasional cough is usually nothing to worry about, persistent coughing can leave you feeling tired and uncomfortable. Fortunately, mild cough caused by common seasonal irritation can often be soothed with simple home remedies and proper self-care.

From staying hydrated and drinking warm beverages to trying honey, ginger, or warm salt-water gargles, several natural approaches may help provide relief. However, it is important to understand the cause of the cough and seek medical attention if symptoms are severe, prolonged, or accompanied by breathing difficulties or other concerning signs.

# Honey with warm water

Mix 1–2 teaspoons of honey in a glass of warm water and sip slowly. Honey can help coat and soothe an irritated throat. Do not give honey to children under 1 year.

# Ginger tea

Add a few slices of fresh ginger to hot water and simmer for 5–10 minutes. Strain and drink warm. Ginger may provide a soothing effect when the throat feels irritated.

# Turmeric milk

Add about ¼ teaspoon of turmeric to a cup of warm milk. Drink before bedtime if it suits you.

# Warm salt-water gargles

Dissolve ½ teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. Gargle for 20–30 seconds and spit it out. Repeat 2–3 times a day to soothe throat irritation.

# Tulsi and ginger tea

Boil a few tulsi leaves with a small piece of ginger in water. Strain and drink warm. This traditional combination can be comforting during a cough or sore throat.

# Stay hydrated

Drink plenty of warm water, soups, and other non-caffeinated fluids. Adequate hydration can help keep mucus thinner and make coughing more comfortable.

# Steam from a warm shower

Sitting in a comfortably steamy bathroom or taking a warm shower may temporarily ease nasal and throat irritation. Avoid very hot steam, especially for children, because of burn risk.

# Avoid common cough triggers

During monsoon, try to limit exposure to cigarette smoke, incense, strong perfumes, dust, and very cold air. Keep damp areas of the home clean and well ventilated.
