Vande Bharat: How to Become a Loco Pilot of India’s Premium Train? Know Eligibility and Full Process

The number of Vande Bharat trains running across India is steadily rising, and with every new launch, the excitement among passengers continues to grow. Known for their modern design, fast speed, and world-class onboard facilities, Vande Bharat Express trains have become a symbol of the new-age Indian Railways. They now operate in several states, and Prime Minister Modi recently inaugurated yet another Vande Bharat service for Uttar Pradesh. Travelling on this semi-high-speed train is a unique experience for passengers, but many young aspirants are curious to know: What qualifications are needed to operate such a prestigious train? Here is a detailed guide.

Loco Pilots of Vande Bharat – Among the Best in Indian Railways

The loco pilots responsible for running Vande Bharat trains are counted among the most highly trained and experienced professionals in the railway system. Their job involves not just controlling the train but ensuring passenger safety, maintaining speed accuracy, and handling advanced digital systems fitted in these trains.

What Educational Qualification Do You Need?

To drive a Vande Bharat train, you must first become a loco pilot in the Indian Railways. For that, the minimum educational requirement is passing Class 10. Along with this, an ITI certificate from a recognised institute is mandatory. Candidates are usually selected from trades such as:

Electrician

Mechanic

Fitter

Motor Mechanic

These technical backgrounds help candidates understand railway engines and electrical machinery better.

Once selected, candidates start their career as Assistant Loco Pilots (ALPs). With sufficient experience, excellent track records, and strong technical skills, ALPs are promoted to Senior Loco Pilot and eventually earn the opportunity to operate elite trains like Vande Bharat.

How Does the Selection Process Work?

The Assistant Loco Pilot recruitment is conducted by the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB). The selection process includes multiple stages:

Computer-Based Written Examination

The test includes sections on reasoning, quantitative aptitude, science fundamentals, and general awareness.

Medical and Fitness Tests

Candidates must have sharp eyesight, good reflexes, and overall physical fitness, as the job demands alertness and quick decision-making.

Training at Railway Institutes

Selected candidates undergo several months of intensive classroom and field training. They learn everything from engine mechanisms to safety protocols and high-speed train operations.

After completing training, new loco pilots are first assigned to freight trains. This phase helps them understand real-time track conditions, engine behaviour, and operational challenges. Over time, based on their efficiency and experience, they move to passenger trains.

Only those with exemplary service and strong technical competence eventually get the responsibility of running premium trains like Vande Bharat, Rajdhani, and Tejas.
